Job Title: Self-Employed Tax Prep (SETP) Tax Preparer

SUMMARY:

The Self-Employed Tax Prep (SETP) program seeks to expand the availability of free tax preparation services to self-employed New Yorkers, including freelancers, gig workers, for-hire drivers, and small business owners, who often struggle to file taxes and manage financial recordkeeping and face limited access to capital, banking services, and loans. This expansion will offer personal income tax filing for New Yorkers with self-employment and small business income through both annual filing and quarterly estimated tax filing, as well as educational workshops and one-on-consultations on recordkeeping and tax filing. The SETP Tax Preparer will complete necessary business and personal forms for annual federal and/or state tax returns. Additionally, preparers will complete forms to assist filers in submitting federal and/or state estimated tax payments and will facilitate group workshops and provide one-on-one consultations. The SETP Tax Preparer will prioritize self-employed and small business returns, but will also support traditional individual filers as time allows.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Complete necessary business and personal forms for annual federal and/or state tax returns.
  • Complete forms to assist filers in submitting quarterly federal and/or state estimated tax payments.
  • Deliver group sessions to clients about the basics of tax filing and recordkeeping.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group consultations, assisting clients with implementing recordkeeping best practices.
  • Be available to conduct and participate in ongoing outreach activities to market the program services
  • Get familiarized with resources and support, such as templates and guidance for recordkeeping available to inform and connect clients as needed.
  • Refer clients to wraparound support services, including but not limited to the City Financial Empowerment Centers and Business Solution Centers, and other trusted resources
  • Document all work completed in required internal (e.g., ClientTrack) and external (e.g., TaxSlayer) data systems.
  • Proactively build and maintain tax preparation expertise (NMIC will provide resources and time for training during work hours).
  • Attend internal program, department, and agency meetings.

Additional related responsibilities may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required credentials, knowledge, and availability:

    • The ability to pass IRS VITA/TCE certification(s) at least at the Advanced level annually (beginning immediately upon hire).
    • Experience with preparing one or both of the following:
    • Individual (1040) federal and state tax returns, including personal returns with schedules A, B, C, D, E, and F, and other schedules, as well as required work papers or calculations.
    • Business and estate (1120, 1120S, 1065, 1041) tax returns such as corporate, S Corp, partnership, and estate tax returns and other schedules of varying complexities.
    • Bilingual (Spanish/English) required.

    Availability:

    • During annual tax season (late January to mid-April) Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 11am – 7pm; Saturday and Sunday 9am – 5pm. The program is closed on Thursday and Friday.
    • During quarterly filing periods (the first two weeks of January, April, July, and October) extended evening and weekend hours to assist filers with time-sensitive applications.
    • At all other times, traditional weekday 9-5 hours with potential morning, evening, or weekend flex hours to accommodate clients’ work schedules.

    Additional preferred credentials:

    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field (completed coursework in tax preparation, accounting, bookkeeping, business finance, or other relevant topics also of value)
    • Enrolled Agent (EA)
    • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licensed by the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions

    Additional skills of interest:

    • Strong analytical, organizational, written, and verbal communications skills with knowledge of personal income taxes as well as tax law knowledge.
    • Experience working in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Ability to deal with the public in a helpful and supportive manner.
    • Proficiency with technical tools including
    • Tax preparation software
    • General database tools
    • Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
    • QuickBooks software experience.
