Compensation: $40,000-$45,000 year or commensurate with experience

Description:

With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing, and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community.  

CHLDC has an opening for one (1) FT YOUTH COORDINATOR in the College Success division at the Franklin K. Lane Campus in our Community School team. Community Schools is a strategy to organize resources and share leadership to integrate social services into the fabric of the schools. Community Schools are equipped to better serve the needs of families so that students come to school ready and able to learn. This is a salaried, exempt position.
 
Community Schools offer a holistic approach toward improving academic performance driven by strong, collaborative partnerships among principals, parents, teachers and CBOs. In Community Schools, parents are real and active partners in their children's education, the school climate is joyful and positive, expanded learning opportunities are standard. An integral part of this approach is the integration and alignment of school- and community-based services throughout an expanded learning day (such as health, mental health, counseling and academic enrichment).

  

Principal Duties:

 

       Provide short-term crisis intervention and concrete services including advocacy, outreach and referral for a designated caseload of 10-15 students who have been identified as struggling with attendance.

       Provide individual counseling, case management services and group workshops around student achievement, college access, career exploration, and overall educational success for a cohort of Youth Workers.

       Collaborate with CHLDC and school staff to meet needs of participants and provide crisis intervention and referrals as needed

       Conduct individual and family outreach to program participants including weekly home visits and daily phone calls as needed

       Help in implementing activities including parent information sessions, leadership activities and Community School program celebrations

       Support in building and maintaining external relationships with organizations that youth can be referred to work with diverse populations and cultures including LGBTQ youth

       Actively participate in all aspects of staff or member development, including weekly supervision, weekly team meetings, pre-service training, and any additional required training

       Demonstrates commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change

       Communicate with key stakeholders at the Lane Campus and related agencies to support student progress toward educational success

       Maintain daily student attendance forms, logs, student records, and portfolios

       Perform other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree
  • Bi-lingual Spanish Preferred, written and verbal      
  • Commitment to youth development perspective.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills to work and interact effectively with a diverse community of stakeholders
  • A self-starting team player with excellent organizational skills
  • Familiar with the community and support agencies
  • Flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of the students, teachers, and families
  • Flexible hours to accommodate work in the evening and some weekends
  • Experience working with families that have diverse cultures and economic backgrounds Ability to work effectively with school aged youth, educators, families, and communities from a wide range of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds. Ability to work collaboratively, with strong relationship building skills.
  •  Must clear DOE fingerprinting and background authorizations.
