PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Sunnyside Community Services (SCS), a multi-service settlement house located in Western Queens. SCS Youth and Family Services (YFS) department offers engaging, youth-centered programming to children and youth throughout Queens and beyond. We offer a free, full day Pre-Kindergarten, five afterschool and summer camp programs, two Beacon Community Centers, a Cornerstone program, a College Readiness and Retention program, a Job Readiness program, and ESOL. Our youth development continuum spans Pre-K to College, and services are offered across seven campuses.

ROLE DESCRIPTION: As a member of the site leadership team, the Assistant Director will report directly to the Program Director and manage the instructional as well as the outreach aspects of the program. The Assistant Director is primarily responsible for the program in the areas of program/event design and implementation, staff development and training, supervision, and data entry. The Assistant Director also supports the day-to-day operations of the program by working side by side with the Program Director and by interfacing with participants and stakeholders in a manner that promotes safety and compliance with funding parameters.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working under the leadership of the Program Director, the Assistant Director’s responsibilities will include:

  • Work with Director to ensure implementation of daily program activities and operations.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with SCS stakeholders such as DYCD, DOE, and local agencies.
  • Assist with overall supervision of staff, participants and communication with parents.
  • Assist in scheduling and supervising interns (SYEP; WLG; Volunteers)
  • Assist with participant recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Identify and implement curricula for programming that align with DOE standards (i.e. STEM, Literacy, and Enrichment); researches and defines educational goals, objectives, and methodologies to meet program goals.
  • Periodically observe line staff and their implementation of lesson plans as well as provide feedback and coaching.
  • Develop and maintain a relationship with designated school personnel and faculty to ensure that our program is aligned with school goals and initiatives.
  • Assist Program Director with meeting contractual requirements that include record keeping, data entry, and reporting.
  • Respond to requests for program data, (from supervisor, agency fiscal department, agency senior managers, data manager, and funders, etc.), in a timely fashion.
  • Assist with the planning and implementation of special events and meetings.
  • Attend and participate in trainings, professional development opportunities, and program meetings.
  • Ensuring that outreach-related outcomes are being met as dictated by funders
  • Adhere to all security and privacy protocols.
  • Ensure the safety of all staff and program participants.
  • Maintain files and documents for internal and external audits.
  • In the absence of the Program Director, the Assistant Director will take on program leadership.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by supervisor related to program operations and agency initiatives.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Associate’s Degree and/or 3+ years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in community organizing/community engagement, or other forms of direct outreach.
  • Excellent communication, project management, and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence with respect to local communities.
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Proficiency in use of technology (i.e., laptops, computers, tablets).
  • Bilingual preferred (proficiency, written and spoken).
  • Knowledge of effective teaching methods and curriculum implementation with afterschool and summer camp settings.
