Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) is a multiservice, community-based organization serving New York City with a focus on western Queens — an area that is home to a uniquely diverse, predominately immigrant population and many low-income families. Established as a small senior center in 1974, SCS began offering licensed home care services in 1979 introduced youth services in 1983, and formalized immigrant services in 2015. Today we provide a full range of human services to 16,000 individuals each year including children, youth, adults, and seniors. Our mission is to enrich lives and strengthen communities through services and engagement for individuals of all ages, beginning with those most in need. We are looking for a Grant Writer to help secure additional funding to meet the growing needs of our community. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about multiple facets of the grants process, from writing proposals to budget development, and be a vital part of a mission-driven non-profit that has been a part of the community’s fabric for nearly 50 years. POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Grant Writer will be an important part of the development team. They will be responsible for researching funding opportunities and securing grants for SCS programs. This will include preparing letters of inquiry (LOI), proposals, and reports for government, foundation and corporate prospects and current funders. They will work in close collaboration with and report to the Manager of Institutional Giving. The development department also works in partnership with program staff around proposals.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare foundation LOIs, proposals and reports to foundation funders.
  • Research foundation, corporate, and other funding opportunities for alignment with SCS programs and share information with the development team.
  • Serve as project manager and main writer in response to government RFPs, coordinating with fiscal and program staff.
  • Maintain grants calendar and help to maintain the donor database in Salesforce.
  • Take part in and collaborate on meeting agendas between program staff and development.
  • Conduct research and analysis of neighborhood demographics to keep abreast of changing needs.
  • Proof and edit drafts prepared by colleagues.
  • Prepare acknowledgement letters for funders.
  • Occasionally draft letters of support, testimony, or other written materials as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Grant writing experience is preferred but journalism, internship or volunteer grant writing experience is acceptable.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines and priorities.
  • Outstanding research skills, preferably including experience in prospect research.
  • Database and/or project management experience is a plus.
  • Interest in team-based collaboration and program development.
  • Non-profit experience and familiarity with the key social/service issues facing SCS participants.
  • SCS currently has a hybrid work model that allows for two days remote per week and three days in the office. Department: Development
