University Settlement Society
Manhattan
Founded in 1886, University Settlement Society is one of New York's most dynamic social service institutions with deep roots on the Lower East Side. Each year University Settlement's diverse programs help over 25,000 low-income and at-risk people build better lives for themselves and their families.
Public Housing
More than half of New York City’s settlement houses operate services in a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) development. Some settlement houses are headquartered within the walls of a NYCHA development and many others run programs in NYCHA space, including child care and early education programs, after school programs, youth activities and senior centers. (See list of settlement houses running programs in NYCHA facilities.)
Settlement houses and the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) have a critical partnership. NYCHA provides housing and services to nearly 500,000 individuals and families in more than 500 developments throughout the City, and is the primary housing for low-income New Yorkers today.
- UNH works with NYCHA to improve the facilities in which settlement house programs are located by identifying and working to facilitate capital projects in NYCHA sites.
- UNH advocates for adequate funding for public housing operations and for services for public housing residents.
- NYCHA provides space for settlement houses to run programs in underserved communities. UNH works with NYCHA to keep this space affordable.
