Founded in 1977, SCAN (Supportive Children's Advocacy Network) New York has evolved from a crisis-focused child welfare service provider, to a holistic, community-based family and children's service center. SCAN's family service programming focuses on setting and attaining positive goals, resolving family crisis, and building on parent, child and family strength. SCAN programming serves targeted communities in East Harlem and Morrisania in the South Bronx.
SCAN's East Harlem programs are provided primarily in collaboration with LaGuardia Memorial House. The SCAN-LaGuardia collaboration provides a holistic range of services to 2,000 children and 250 families residing within the East Harlem community. Services include: family counseling; parenting workshops; after-school programs; summer day camp, and teen activities. Family-focused initiatives include: SCAN Family Choir; Project PACT ( Police and Community Together); volunteer parent-aides; family camping weekends; whole language family literacy; SCAN's Somos El Futuro Youth Leadership project, and "Reach for the Stars," a model upward bound project.
SCAN's South Bronx programs are focused within the Morrisania community. SCAN is the community sponsor for The Mullaly Park Recreation Center. Mullaly Academy provides a wide range of cultural arts, education and recreational services to 2,000 South Bronx youth and 200 families. Through two satellite offices, SCAN reaches an additional 1,000 children and 300 families annually. SCAN s Family Renewal Center focuses on substance abusing parents and their children.
In addition, SCAN sponsors a number of school based programs in Bronx CSD9 and Manhattan CSD4. SCAN was recently selected by The After School Corporation to sponsor a model after school program at PS53 in Bronx CSD9. SCAN co-sponsors a Beacon in Manhattan CSD4 at JHS99 (La Isla del Barrio) in partnership with Boys Harbor and Union Settlement.
