OVERVIEW OF NEW SETTLEMENT APARTMENTS: New Settlement Apartments is a not-for-profit housing & community service organization, located in the southwest Bronx, with a 27-year track record of active commitment to neighborhood revitalization and community development. An integral part of the progressive housing philosophy embraced by New Settlement is that "housing is not just bricks and mortar." Our mission is not only to rebuild and maintain a sizeable portion of the housing stock in this neighborhood, but also to support the rebuilding of its social capital. New Settlement currently provides year-round educational, cultural and recreational programs and social services to 13,500 youth and adults who live in the surrounding area.

Position Summary and Essential Functions 

The Youth Advisor will provide support to participants ages 17-24 from the beginning of the program throughout their entire stay.  Responsible for a caseload of 20-40 participants providing initial assessments, case management, referral services and the coordination of program activities.  The Youth Advisor will also provide follow-up support services and job and post-secondary placement assistance. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE YOUTH ADVISOR

·        Conduct intake interviews of all candidates to assess their likely for program participation and completion as well as to determine any potential limitations/barriers that may hinder performance. 

·        Facilitate the development and progress of Individual Service Plan (ISP) based on completion of a comprehensive assessment

·        Counsel and coach young adults in one-on-one and in groups and facilitate weekly peer-group meetings and workshops

·        Hold youth accountable to realize the goals they articulate in their ISP, through regular schedule meetings with participants, using a task-oriented support strategy.

·        Conduct job readiness workshops, host college and career fairs and other events to facilitate pathway to graduation and post-secondary instruction or employment

·        Provide in-depth career counseling and assessments and assist with the job search and job placements

·        Design and facilitate weekly peer-group meetings and/or workshops on life-skills, job readiness and leadership development competencies based on the YouthBuild program model

·        Conduct ongoing outreach to neighborhood youth, CBO’s, schools, churches and local city and state offices and agencies on the YouthBuild program, the requirements and benefits

·        Work with program partners, volunteers and mentors to collaborate to deliver services, information, education and perform community service projects

·        Provide support and a safety net for participants, as appropriate and advocating on participants’ behalf, as needed.

·        Strengthen our network of partnerships with expert resource organizations and institutions which can provide needed services in health care, education, job training and placement, housing and criminal justice.

·        Capture, maintain and track program and participant records and enter data and case notes in MIS and DYB systems

·       Participate in staff-development trainings provided through our networks and partnerships, and representing the program in settings with partners and colleagues, as appropriate.

 

EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION & SKILLS REQUIRED: B.A. preferred and 2-3 years of experience working with young adults in a non-mandated program in a community-based setting. Counseling and case-management experience. Bilingual skills (Spanish-English) are a plus. Commitment to create a welcoming program environment and culture where youth are held accountable to meet high expectations and supported in doing so through positive, educational interventions and structured, holistic programming.

Salary Information

SALARY AND BENEFITS OFFERED: Salary range: mid-$30,000 - $40,000, negotiable. New Settlement offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k).
