New Settlement Apartments is a not-for-profit housing & community service organization, located in the Mt. Eden neighborhood of the southwest Bronx, with a 26 year track record of active commitment to neighborhood revitalization and community development. New Settlement Apartments includes 18 buildings with 1,082 units of affordable rental housing servicing an economically and ethnically diverse population with an on-site property management team. New Settlement also provides year-round educational, cultural and recreational programs and social services to 13,500 youth and adults who live in the surrounding area.

JOB SUMMARY:  The Receptionist plays an essential role in the smooth and effective running of the front desk.  He/she provides exceptional customer service and will become knowledgeable about the various services and programs offered at NSA.  The position requires that he/she greet tenants and guests in person and via telephone answering general inquiries, addressing questions and directing to appropriate staff.  The ideal candidate will be reliable, courteous and possess a desire to serve others and enjoy playing a support role.  He/she should possess excellent problem solving skills and the ability to multi-task.  


  • Answering a busy twelve line phone system.
  • Receive, sort and distribute mail and other deliveries.
  • Prepares computerized labels and schedules pick-up for UPS overnight mailings.
  • Provides support to the Administrative Assistant and serves as back-up in the event of his/her absence.
  • Distributes applications for apartment rentals and community service programs.
  • Scans copies of invoices and check requests on a daily basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of 2 years Receptionist experience in a fast paced office environment.
  • Minimum education level of a High School Diploma, some college preferred.
  • Flexible with a proven track record of successfully multi-tasking.
  • Committed to providing excellent customer service in person and over the telephone.
  • Excellent listening and information gathering skills.
  • Self-motivated with ability to take initiative, as well as ability to work as part of a team.  
  • Proven composure in difficult situations with the ability to manage and resolve conflict effectively.
  • Good knowledge and experience with Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • High level of comfort interacting with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Bilingual English and Spanish required.

Salary Information

$26k, negotiable, depending on experience. Comprehensive benefits package, including 401(k). Immediate opening. Full-time, Monday – Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Reports to Administrative Coordinator.
