OVERVIEW:  The Broome Street Academy Charter High School will prepare our young people for post-secondary success that leads to positive life outcomes. ·        Identify and support incoming and current students that are below grade level in reading.

·        Assess all students identified using the QRI reading Inventory.

·        Implement reading curriculums that are appropriate for student levels and needs.

·        Work with students in small groups and push into English and History courses.

·        Co-teach in English or History course

·        Monitor and manage progress of students receiving Reading Intervention.

·        Create an appropriate meeting schedule for group and individual reading instruction.

·        Support teachers and staff to meet needs of students requiring intervention.

·        Maintain data on students who require intervention, analyze data, write goals and develop interventions using data, be able to report on all learning data for students with intervention.

·        Work with Academic Intervention Department Chair on follow up for RTI program and student individual RTI plans

·        Maintain up-to-date on all laws and best practices associated with students with suspected disabilities and special education needs, communicate all relevant information and changes to relevant staff.

·        Align interventions to common core standards and expectations.

·        Complete IEPs and give input on IEPs for students that require reading intervention and have IEPs.

·        Lead Professional Development and school-wide initiatives on how to infuse literacy into all classrooms.

·        Complete other projects as assigned by supervisor


·        Master’s degree required.

·        NYS Special Education certification required.

·        Background in Literacy Education required.

·        Experience teaching and working with students with IEPs and 504 plans, required.

·        Experience working with Wilson, Orton, or other specific reading curriculums

·        Minimum of three years of relevant experience, preferably in a school setting.

·        Knowledge of common core standards and proficiency with planning utilizing those standards.

·        Excellent oral, written communication and analytical skills.

·        Demonstrated ability to work effectively and creatively as part of an interdisciplinary team.

·        Ability to engage the interest of students, meet student achievement goals and be held accountable for student results.

·        Demonstrated ability to evaluate tests and other measurements of achievement.

·        Must be flexible and resilient.

·        Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students, including those with special needs and English Language Learners.

·        Demonstrated ability to work well with and engage the participation of caregivers.

·        Work effectively as a team member.

Salary Information

FTE: 40 hrs/Week
Salary: Commensurate with experience
