Union Settlement Association, established in 1895, is one of the largest social service agencies in East Harlem. The agency provides childcare, after-school programs, youth development, college preparation, adult education (including ESL and GED), programs for the elderly, mental health services, and more. Union Settlement has approximately 400 dedicated employees who work from 18 different sites to serve over 13,000 local residents each year. Position Summary:

The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (NPP) will provide mental health services for children and adult clients. The NPP will prescribe and monitor medication for clients. Lastly, the NPP will be part of a vibrant consultation and learning environment.


·       Integrated health/mental health care program development, implementation and evaluation.

·       Provide onsite physical health assessments, screenings, monitoring, treatment and referrals to further physical health care services through local physical health care providers.

·       Initiate selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations, and laboratory examinations, prescribes and alters medication regimens, and interprets findings and alters plan of care.

·       Teach and provide counseling in the areas of health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses to patients.

·       Provide psychiatric evaluations.

·       Prescribe and monitor medication for clients.

·       Approve case treatment plans.

·       Coordinate and follow up on all referrals, as well as inform the primary therapist and psychiatrist of the outcome of assessments, monitoring, physicals, and next steps; also inform primary therapist and psychiatrist of any necessary information gathered from primary care physician or specialist.

·       Document all services in the client’s electronic case record and incorporate into the Integrated Individualized Treatment Plan.

·       Participate in regular supervision.

·       Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.



·       New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse.

·       New York State Department of Education certification as a Nurse Practitioner and:

o   A graduate of New York State Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent, or certification as Nurse Practitioner by a national association via examination.

o   Completed pharmacy component of not less than required semester hours or equivalent and completed a three hour course pertaining to New York State and federal laws on prescriptions and record-keeping.

·       Completion of a master’s degree program designed to prepare a registered nurse to provide acute/primary health care services or the successful completion of an approved supplemental education program (i.e. post-Master’s NP certificate).

·       Bilingual (English/Spanish).

·       Professional certification by a relevant professional organization preferred.
