LITERACY ZONE COUNSELOR (P/T)

Job Description

OVERVIEW: The Family Literacy Program provides ESOL and Technology classes to immigrant adults in New York City. University Settlement provides a comprehensive network of services to over 10,000 people of all ages lining in the Lower East Side. Its broad network of activities includes adult literacy classes, mental health counseling and intensive case management; group and family day care; support services to the formerly homeless; after-school and summer camp for children and teens; a senior center and a credit union.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop students individual education plans with students
  • Become familiar with providers, partner agencies and programs in order to help students with referrals to other training programs and other education programs
  • Work with teachers and other staff to ensure that students goals are met
  •  Do follow-up and outreach to help students be successful
  • Attend ASISTS training and be able to enter data into ASISTS database
  • Track progress of student achievement and attainment of NRS goals
  • Do assessments and tests as required by the program
  • Maintain attendance and performance records for students
  • Attend  State-mandated Literacy Zone Conferences
  • Network with Literacy Zone collaborators to ensure that Literacy Zone objectives are met
  • Coordinate with program staff to ensure that all participants are meeting individual goals as well as program goals
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • B.A. degree
  • Bilingual Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese or Fukinese required. Spanish, Bengali, or Urdu a Plus.

Salary Information

Hours: PT 17 hours per week, Wednesday, Thursday 4pm-9pm, Saturday 9am-5pm
Salary: $19 per hour
