Job Description
Celebrating over 30 years of service to the Washington Heights and Inwood communities, Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC) is a community-based, not-for-profit organization founded to serve neighborhood residents through our client-centered programs. NMIC minimizes evictions; maximizes improvements to the housing stock; provides education and training to increase employment opportunities; supports families with child care, case management, and domestic violence intervention services; and, gives residents a greater voice in the decisions that affect their lives. All NMIC services are free and bilingual in English and Spanish. Summary
The Job Developer is responsible for developing permanent job leads, maintaining a job bank with entry and advanced level job openings, and placing program participants in employment. The Job Developer will assess participants’ job skills, abilities and interests and match participants with appropriate positions. Populations include individuals transitioning from public assistance to work, individuals with limited English proficiency, non-custodial parents, ex-offenders, and other unemployed and underemployed job seekers.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Assess enrolled/registered customers in order to make appropriate employment referrals with minimum six month employment retention target goals; two year retention goals depending on program contract.
- Develop permanent employment opportunities for low-income/unemployed job seekers in employment and job training programs including but not limited to public assistance recipients and limited English proficiency customers.
- Develop relationships with employers and companies within and outside of Washington Heights/Inwood community that are appropriate for enrolled customers.
- Work with customers who become displaced to ensure contract milestones targets are met.
- Market wage subsidy program/s available for particular NMIC customers via contract holder NPAC/Seedco.
- Working with Case Managers and Job Readiness Instructor to better assess participants’ employment readiness.
- Formally report customer issues/barriers that arise during assessments/job placement referrals via shared computer reporting systems in place.
- Document and submit appropriate NMIC Customer referrals to appropriate case manager.
- Document and submit appropriate documentation, “Just Hired” forms to Retention Verification Specialist for all placements acquired through own efforts.
- Attend Programmatic Customer Orientations; Programmatic and Organizational Staff meetings, both on and/or off site.
- Work with other the job development staff to develop and share job leads.
- Willingness to facilitate Job Search/Networking Work Shop in a group setting.
- Occasionally accompany groups to Job Fairs and canvassing companies that offer job application opportunities for mass groups.
- Ability to work with customers and peers in a respectful, professional and motivational manner.
- Able to occasionally flex schedule to accommodate programmatic needs.
- Able to maintain scheduled appointments with customers, peers and supervisor.
Qualifications
- BS/BA degree in related field with at least 2 years experience in job development and placement,
- HS Diploma/GED with at least four years experience in job development and placement.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills;
- Previous job development experience;
- Ability to meet deadlines and document job referrals, placements and job retention milestones;
- Experience working with public assistance recipients and other low-income job seekers;
- Ability to organize and deliver presentations to clients and employers; team-building skills; and
- Computer skills necessary.
- Must be able to accept directives; uphold programmatic procedures and protocol;
- Work well under challenging circumstances; and adjust well to change;
- Able to communicate issues and concerns, as well as suggestions.
- Bilingual/Spanish preferred.
