Job Description

The Department of Children and Youth is looking for a part-time Instructor to teach subjects covered on the TASC exam, support the Youth and Education portfolio. The Instructor will serve as part of the educational team supporting the overall goals of a performance based contract for youth 16-24 years old in the Young Adult Literacy and EXCEL program. Please specify the subject interest, Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under the direction of the Program Coordinator to support the academic goals of the Young Adult Literacy and EXCEL program.
  • Help ensure for high quality programming. Offer input on program goals, program design, and evaluations of program activities.
  • Create a nurturing and supportive environment for the participants.
  • Work with the leadership team to plan and facilitate staff meetings, orientation, trips, events, etc. 
  • Develop and build relationships with parents and families of program participants.
  • Ensure a physically safe environment for participants.
  • Attend internal and external agency meetings and trainings.
  • Submit reports as required including monthly reports to supervisor.
  • Submit weekly lesson plans.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

PROGRAM SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identify, obtain and organize educational resources, materials and curriculum guides for thematic periods (ie, bulletin boards, trips, etc). 
  • Develop lesson plans with a particular focus on literacy; reading and writing to ensuring that activities are engaging, age-appropriate, thematic, experiential, educationally sound and engaging. 
  • Create and maintain an educationally enriching environment including bulletin boards, displays and library.
  • Implement technology applications in the classroom; develop computer literacy activities and promote project- based learning.
  • Attend monthly supervisory sessions to identify participants’ educational needs, review lessons, assess classroom environment, and plan events.
  • Collaborates with Case Manager to address the specific needs of participants. 
  • Provide 1:1 or group tutoring to interested program participants. 
  • Provide feedback to on the development of the educational component.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field of study.
  • Certificate in Adult Literacy preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of at least two years of experience in an educational setting, high school or college preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication, time management and organizational skills are necessary.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and other standard business technology is required. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork.
  • Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents.
  • Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation.
  • Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required. Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.
