Founded in 1965, the Chinese-American Planning Council, Inc. (CPC) aims to promote the social and economic empowerment of Chinese American, immigrant, and low-income communities. Today, CPC is the nation's largest Asian American social services agency and strives to be the premier social service and leadership development organization. CPC serves over 60,000 community members each year through more than 50 programs at over 30 sites throughout New York City, including early childhood education, school-age care, youth services, workforce development, community services, and senior services. In 2017, CPC launched Advancing Our CommUNITY, its organization-wide strategy to expand services to address persistent needs and emerging trends and to improve leadership skills among staff and community members.


CPC’s Education and Career Services Division (ECS) provides dynamic programs and activities that bridge youth and adults with their highest educational, economic and leadership potential. ECS believes it is never too early nor too late to start learning, which is why we use an asset-based approach to maximize clients’ current strengths. Whether in our schools, community centers, or internship sites, ECS creates equitable learning environments that promote leadership development, self-advocacy, and community building. Our programs equip clients with essential skills and experiences today so that they are empowered to take the next step tomorrow.


Position Title: HIGHER EDUCATION COUNSELOR, Project Gateway College Counseling Center Location: 165 Eldridge Street, New York, NY 10002
Schedule: Full Time 35 hours per week


Program Overview

The Project Gateway College Counseling Center’s mission is to empower youth to fulfill their potential through expanding their knowledge on post-secondary education options. Project Gateway aims to clarify the college application process by providing the best educational resources for youth. Through advising sessions, family meetings, workshops, and college trips, Project Gateway helps youth and their families navigate the entire admissions process.


Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The Higher Education Counselor will report directly to the Director of Project Gateway.


·        Provide individualized guidance to youth on the college admissions and financial aid processes

·        Assist youth with completing college, financial aid and scholarship applications, and admissions essays

·      Develop and facilitate college access, financial aid, and life skills workshops for youth internally and at community partner sites

·     Input and track student data including, but not limited to, academic profiles, admissions decisions, scholarship awards, surveys/questionnaires

·       Network with higher education institutions and advocate on behalf of Project Gateway; collaborate with local high schools and community organizations

·        Plan and coordinate college trips to various in-state and out-of-state schools

·        Refer youth to additional support services as needed

·        Provide follow-up services for former participants; maintain an alumni database

·        Conduct presentations on higher education access and financial aid seminars for families

·        Keep current with higher education policy and represent Project Gateway at meetings, conferences and symposiums

·        Participate in opportunities for professional development

·        Report to and fulfill other duties as assigned by the Director of Project Gateway


Qualifications and Skills

·        Bachelor’s Degree required

·        Knowledge of public and private higher education systems, educational opportunity programs, and financial aid applications

·        Experience working with youth and young adult populations

·        Excellent verbal and written communication, facilitation, research and organizational skills

·   Culturally competent professional with a strong work ethic and demonstrated passion for empowering diverse populations

·        Ability to take initiative, establish priorities, and work independently

·        Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese is a plus
