Job Description

Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is a not-for-profit community development organization serving 8,000 residents a year through a comprehensive array of housing preservation, economic development, community organizing and youth and family support services programs and projects. With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community. 

 

Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for one (1) full-time High School Transition Coordinator in the Youth and Family Services (YFS) division. This position is salaried for 35 hours per week.  Reports to the Middle School Student Success Center Director.

 

Principal Duties:

  • With MS SSC Director, implement an innovative Middle School Success Center (MS SSC), a youth-led center to support middle school youth in education planning, with a focus on high school choice and early college awareness, at Intermediate School 171 and Highland Park Community School.
  • Design and deliver workshops for middle school students and their families on high school choice and early college awareness in school-day and out-of-school time settings. 
  • With MS SSC Director, design and implement a model of educational counseling for middle school students and their parents, designed to provide perspective and information about high school choice, to encourage high aspirations and long-term thinking in educational planning, and to facilitate effective communication and decision-making between youth, their parents and school staff this includes the College Access for All Initiative.
  • With MS SSC Director, recruit, select, train and manage of team of SSC youth leaders who will provide information and counsel to their peers, and provide input on the program’s goal and objectives from a student perspective.
  • Work collaboratively with school leaders, including principal, teachers, parent coordinator, guidance counselors and the PTA.
  • Work collaboratively with CHLDC’s College Success Program to forge an educational planning pipeline from middle school through high school.
  • Guide students through the process of admittance to selective and audition high schools, and to programs that prepare students for admittance to selective and private high schools.
  • Conduct high school and college tours.  Accompany students to high school open houses and fairs and/or organize local high school fairs.
  • Complete 28 hours of professional development annually.
  • Demonstrate commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Attend meetings, as required.

 

Position Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Education or related field.
  • Demonstrated interest in educational development and access.
  • English-Spanish fluency preferred
  • Experience working with young adolescents in individual and group settings.
  • Demonstrated skills in training, counseling and family engagement.
  • Successful candidates must be able to manage relationships with a diverse set of community stakeholders.  
  • Commitment to working from a youth development perspective.

Salary Information

Compensation: $37,500 - $40,000 dependent upon experience. We also offer a very competitive benefits package.
