Job Description

Position Description: The Engagement Specialist will be responsible for building relationships with Door members, working to engage members in Door programs and activities, and providing outreach to members who are disconnected from the community. S/he will work with the Center Space Activity Specialists, Teaching Artists, Member Services department, and front desk, along with his/her supervisor to create strategies for engaging youth and creating a supportive and welcoming environment for members.

Additionally, s/he will be a part of and provide support for The Door’s Behavioral Management System by enforcing team decisions and providing input. The Engagement Specialist will also work with other service providers, both internal and external to create and engage young people in an environment that reflects The Door’s core values and mission.



·        Develop and implement group activities and workshops targeting Door population.

·        Facilitate large and small discussion groups and other activities to foster a sense of community.

·        Assist with planning and implementing programs in Center Space.

·        Assist Activity Specialists with providing general supervision of Center Space

·        Work collaboratively with Door programs and staff members to engage members in community programming

·        Build relationships and establish a rapport with Door members based on consistency and conversation

·        Maintain awareness of agency programming and facilitate youth knowledge of and connection to available opportunities

·        Ensure that youth receive referrals to appropriate Door programs as well as community resources

·        Provide de-escalation and crisis intervention, as necessary

·        Work as an active member of The Door’s Behavioral Management Team (BMT) and attend all associated meetings

·        Maintain all agency reporting requirements

·        Participate in agency-wide and department staff meetings monthly; as well as all scheduled team meetings

·        Participate in an ongoing case conferencing rotation including staff from all program areas to determine appropriate plans for young people

·        Complete any additional responsibilities and functions as assigned by their supervisor



·        BA in related field preferred, High School Diploma or HSE required

·        Knowledge of youth issues and/or familiarity working with youth population

·        Knowledgeable of and ability to apply positive youth development principles to working with young people

·        Ability to provide crisis management and crisis intervention

·        Experience and/or knowledge working with street-involved youth

·        Commitment to professionalism and ability to maintain a very professional attitude as a staff representative of the Door

·        Understanding of adolescent development, assessment, counseling and/or crisis management

·        Excellent oral and written communication skills required

·        Ability to work effectively and creatively as part of an interdisciplinary team

·        Proficiency in Spanish, Mandarin, or French strongly preferred
