LENOX HILL NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE, widely recognized as one of New York’s premier human services providers, is a 125 year old settlement house that provides an extensive array of effective and integrated services social, educational, legal, health, housing, mental health, nutritional and fitness which significantly improve the lives of 15,000 people in need each year, ages 3 to 103, on the East Side of Manhattan. We are seeking a Director to lead our Innovative Senior Center, the Center @ Lenox Hill Neighborhood House which provides an incredible array of expansive programming that attracts hundreds of seniors daily from diverse backgrounds and abilities (from the very active to the very frail) 365 days a year while providing a broad range of invaluable public health, case management, fitness and aquatics, health and wellness, arts and culture, education and socialization activities.

Reporting to the Chief Program Officer, the Director will be responsible for supervising and coordinating all services provided at the Center and will provide primary programmatic oversight of the day today activities and operations at the Center. The Director will evaluate and enhance existing programming and develop new initiatives for older adults. This is an exciting professional opportunity for someone passionate about older adults and experienced in the delivery of effective services.  

The Director will:
  • Recruit, supervise and mentor a multidisciplinary staff, including seven employees (i.e., social workers, generalists, arts and wellness specialists and administrators) as well as a corps of committed volunteers who deliver classes and services that enable and encourage the socialization, education and mental/physical fitness of older adults.
  • Interface daily with Center members, provide social services and referrals to members as needed, respond to member issues and complaints, and assist Social Services staff with the diverse mental, physical and socio-economic needs of our members.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the Center and ensure they are conducted in accordance with our client-centered methodology and relevant government regulations.
  • Collaborate with Lenox Hill Neighborhood House’s staff from many departments (Legal Advocacy, Food Services, Visual and Performing Arts, Fitness and Aquatics), as well as with professionals from other community-based organizations to maximize resources for Senior Center members.
  • Work closely with the Advisory Council comprised of member leadership and continue to advance the Center’s vision of member-driven programming that leverages the strengths, creativity and experience of older adults.
  • Partner with our Executive Chef and Food Services department to help facilitate the provision of the farm-to-table meals provided three times daily, 365 days a year to the Members of the Center.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate for the role of Director must be adept at responding to emerging challenges that arise daily in a very social and busy community setting. The person should be highly flexible and adaptive in nature, and possess the interpersonal skills to work effectively with many diverse backgrounds and personalities.

Other important qualities we are looking for in a candidate include: a person with a welcoming and inclusive personality; someone with the ability to listen well, with insight and empathy, to many stakeholders; excellent facilitation skills; a creative idea-generator, with the ability to translate ideas into action.

S/he should possess a combination of supervisory, managerial, administrative and direct service skills. S/he must be detail oriented, have significant initiative and also have excellent writing, communication, and organizational abilities. Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Administration or Public Health or other related field is preferred. Work schedule may include evenings and/or weekends. An extremely competitive compensation package is available for this important position in our settlement house.
