Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is a not-for-profit community development organization serving 8,000 residents a year through a comprehensive array of housing preservation, economic development, community organizing and youth and family support services programs and projects. With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community. 


Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has an opening for one (1) Full Time Counsler in the Youth LEAD Program in the Career and Education Programs Division. This position is salaried on a weekly schedule.


Youth LEAD is a holistic program supporting young adults ages, 17-24 who wish to obtain their High  School Equivalency Diploma (formerly GED).  The program operates from 5-9 pm, Monday-Thursday offering a mix of academic, workforce development, and life skills instruction.  The Youth Advocate provides one-on-one support to the young adults while also facilitating a portion of the life skills and workforce development programming.


Principal Duties:


  • Provide individual strengths-based intervention for YouthLEAD participants including orientation, assessment, action planning, problem-solving, attendance accountability, counseling, career planning, and retention
  • Provide ongoing case management by creating and maintaining social support linkages for the YouthLEAD participants to address barriers to their academic progress and career development.
  • Engage in program recruitment activities.
  • Conduct outreach on behalf of participants including home visits, community outreach, and phone calls
  • Conduct activities for YouthLEAD participants including appropriate supportive groups, recreational outings, field trips, leadership activities, and in-house workshops
  • Manage student information and records on file and on in-house database
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team for coordination and support of employment and education goals
  • Participate in meetings, trainings, committees, and other agency activities as requested
  • Demonstrates commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Requirements:
  • Group Process Facilitation Experience Required.
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and ability to meet documentation deadlines.
  • B.A. in related field required.  MSW and MS candidates preferred
  • Youth development and/or workforce development experience required.
  • Bilingual/Spanish fluency preferred.



·       Reports directly to the Youth LEAD Program Director


Work Environment: This position works out of an office setting. This role routinely uses standard equipment such as computers, cellphones, photocopiers, fax machines and standard equipment such as pens and highlighters.


Physical Demands:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Travel:  Periodic travel may be expected for this position.

Salary Information

$38,000 - $42,000, dependent upon experience. We offer a very competitive benefits package.
