Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:  United Neighborhood Houses of New York (UNH) is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated individual for a Communications internship. The successful candidate will report to the Senior Communications Associate and will support the Development & Communication Department’s work in designing publications and other materials, social media “listening” and campaign strategies and implementation, and special event planning and execution. If you are a student interested in communications, marketing, and/or public relations, this is a great opportunity to build skills and receive hands-on experience in a nonprofit context.

 

ABOUT UNITED NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSES OF NEW YORK:

UNH is the member organization of 38 settlement houses, which are located in all five boroughs and serve over 750,000 New Yorkers. Settlement houses offer a wide range of services to their communities including early childhood education, after-school programs, job training, college readiness, adult literacy classes, legal help for immigrants and tenants, programs for healthy aging, and much more. UNH supports these organizations by advocating for funding and policies that strengthen these organizations and the programs they offer, build the next generation of nonprofit leaders by providing customized professional development and scholarships for continuing education, and promoting program innovation.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

  • Assist with creating a monthly internal newsletter, a quarterly external e-newsletter, blog posts, and press releases
  • Assist with updating the website
  • Help design infographics for press pitches and reports
  • Support the layout of UNH publications
  • Attend and photograph events
  • Organize and monitor social media, suggest new opportunities for strengthening social media presence
  • Assist with creation and maintenance of media lists
  • Provide on-site support during UNH events
 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong writing skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Proven ability and knowledge of social media platforms, especially Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram
  • Graphic design skills, including basic knowledge of Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign, preferred
  • Demonstrated photography skills with either self-owned camera or high-quality cell phone 
  • Candidate must have strong organizational and communications skills, be detail-oriented, and reliable. Comfortable in fast-paced environment and ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.

Salary Information

SCHEDULE:
Part-time. Minimum 3 months, 10-15 hours per week (three days per week preferred). Length of internship and hours per week flexible depending upon the requirements of your program

No compensation.
