With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing, and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community.  

CHLDC has an opening for one (1) College Access Counselor at College STEPS.  The College STEPS program provides the resources and tools necessary for each student to reach his/her post-secondary education goals.  This is a full-time position.  The counselor will support of cohort of high school students through the college application process.  


·          Provide individual counseling and group workshops around college access, career exploration, and educational success for a cohort of juniors and seniors at Transit Tech High School, STEPS office and other partner high schools.

·          Help in implementing activities including parent information sessions, college visits, leadership activities and program celebrations.

·          Communicate with key stakeholders at Transit Tech High School and related agencies to support student progress toward educational success.

·          Act as a liaison between students and school personnel.

·          Implement comprehensive outreach and recruitment strategy to promote the programming of the STEPS program.

·          Ensure the maintenance and growth of the STEPS through supporting fundraising activities and tracking STEPS student utilization and outcomes.

·          Enter student file data into data tracking system weekly.

·          Maintain daily student attendance forms, student record and portfolios.

·          Collaborate with CHLDC and school staff to meet needs of participants and provide crisis intervention and referrals as needed.

·          Conduct individual and family outreach to program participants including home visits and phone calls as needed.

·          Participate in meetings and staff development sessions with CHLDC.

·          Perform other duties as assigned.


Position Requirements:

·          BA in Education, Counseling or related field.

·          Must have flexible schedule, some evening/weekend hours may be required.

·          Strong interpersonal skills; highly organized and motivated.

·          Knowledge of college admissions and financial aid process required.

·          Commitment to youth development perspective.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.

Salary Information

Compensation: $40,000-42,000 dependent upon experience. We also offer a very competitive benefits package.
