OVERVIEW: The Broome Street Academy Charter High School will prepare our young people for post-secondary success that leads to positive life outcomes. The primary role of the Admissions Counselor is to oversee all admissions processes to insure annual enrollment targets are met and Broome Street Academy meets its mission of serving our target population of 50% homeless students, foster youth, displaced youth and students from failing middle schools.


  • Designs and implements a comprehensive strategic plan of admissions of new students
  • Collaborates with targeted middle schools the New York City Department of Education, New York City Non Profit Agencies, and other relevant partners to meet admissions goals
  • Manages the admissions process from point of inquiry through enrollment
  • Presents the school to prospective students and parents and involves other staff members as needed
  • Insures systematic and efficient handling of applications and communication with caregivers and candidates and communicates final decisions to the appropriate individuals
  • Chairs and selects membership of the Admissions Committee
  • Develops an admissions budget to include marketing materials, ads, mailings, web presence and publications that interpret the school to prospective students and other constituents
  • Demonstrates deep knowledge of the mission and values of BSA and can relate information to prospective families
  • Initiates and creates activities intended to interest parents and potential supporting in sending students to BSA
  • Promotes good relationships and creates networking opportunities and support for representatives with outside agencies that can be helpful in attracting students that meet the mission of the BSA charter
  • Evaluates and redesigns where appropriate all aspects of the admissions program with the goal of maintaining a capacity enrollment of qualified students and wait-listed students
  • Manages the re-enrollment of current students for the succeeding year with tracking data on attrition and retention
  • Keeps relevant statistics on all aspects of the admission and re-enrollment program using multi-media formats of presentation
  • Completes other activities as deemed necessary by the Head of School
  • Designs and conducts Open Houses to meet enrollment goals.
  • Represents the school at various gatherings and conferences related to admissions.
  • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication
  • Maintains professional demeanor and appearance
  • Has effective time management skills
  • Completes self-evaluation and participates in supervisory activities including annual evaluation
  • Believes in and models the mission and values of Broome Street Academy



  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred background in school counseling preferred
  • Three or more years of related experience in an urban school
  • Experience with Charter enrollment
  • Experience with foster youth or vulnerable populations
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with children, caregivers, and outside stakeholders
  • Relentless commitment to the academic success of all students
  • Stamina to handle long days and the intensity required to work in a high-performing charter school
  • A flexible thinker willing to do “whatever it takes”
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Outlook
  • Proficient learning new technology and programs used in the admissions process such as School Mint and Power School, ATS and HSST
