ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW: Since 1893, Henry Street has delivered the most effective, compassionate and comprehensive services possible to residents of the Lower East Side. As a multifaceted not-for-profit, Henry Street provides innovative social services, arts programs and healthcare services from 18 locations throughout the Lower East Side. Building upon its legacy for innovation and effective programming, Henry Street has grown to offer more than 50 different programs, currently making it the most comprehensive settlement house in New York City, as well as one of the City’s largest social service agencies. Henry Street is governed by a 45-member Board of Directors and is supported by government grants and contracts, as well as foundation, corporate and individual support.

Our HSE Prep classes are a part of Henry Street Settlement’s Education and Employment Services, a $10M division providing a continuum of services from early childhood education through adult workforce programs designed to assist individuals in obtaining the skills necessary for lifetime self-sufficiency. HSE Prep classes will offer low-level job seekers opportunities to work towards earning their High School Equivalency. The ABE/Pre-HSE instructor will lead classes, instruct students in all subjects included on the TASC, with an emphasis on math, develop curriculum and materials, design lessons, maintain a successful learning environment, collaborate with program staff and maintain program data/complete data entry as required by program and funding sources.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education (MEd) preferred
  • One (1) year teaching experience required
  • Ability to engage a diverse population including disconnected youth, immigrants and adult learners
  • Knowledge of ABE and Pre-HSE curriculum and HSE testing requirements
  • Ability to teach all subject areas (reading, math, science, social studies and writing), math expertise preferred
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and web-hosted databases
  • Commitment to incorporating innovative teaching methods
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to assess differences in learning styles and capitalize on student strengths
  • Understanding of workforce development landscape and how to incorporate into curriculum a plus

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain a classroom conducive to learning and facilitate successful participant engagement, quality interaction and learning
  • Establish clear expectations and encouraging student accountability
  • Implement quality instructional practices, and vary methods of instruction, to encourage participation and retention
  • Conduct regular assessment/post-tests to determine advancement
  • Maintain timely and complete documentation, including individual case notes as prescribed by Program Coordinator and Director
  • Participate in required program and agency meetings including supervision
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor
