Literacy Through the Arts in Afterschool

Through special initiatives, UNH provides grants to enrich afterschool programs throughout New York City. In 2008, with funding from The EHA Foundation, Inc., UNH is providing grants to seven UNH members for programs to develop young people's literacy skills through the arts:

  • Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation implemented a program that engages children in the exploration of literature through parody and theatrical interpretation.

  • Hamilton-Madison House combined literacy and choral instruction in a new after school program entitled Sing It and Spell It in which children learn to read and write new words in the context of new songs.

  • Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House created The Comic Book Club, an alternative pathway for building literacy skills through which children write, design and publish original comic books, drawing from personal experiences, interests and dreams.

  • Lenox Hill Neighborhood House created the Families of the World: Literacy Through the Arts project to introduce its after school participants to music, dance, visual art and drama from diverse cultures.

  • Riverdale Neighborhood House implemented the Storytelling Arts project to develop the presentation and teaching skills of "Young Storytellers" (grades 4-6).

  • School Settlement Association developed a Poetry Program designed to foster creativity through the reading and writing of poetry on topics important to the children involved.

  • Union Settlement Association implemented a literacy program entitled Rising Stars Theme Teams, which involves children ages 6 - 12 in cross-disciplinary projects culminating in multimedia presentations.

UNH also facilitates relationships between member agencies and other arts resources including Arts to Grow, which partners with schools and community organizations to make art classes available to low-income youth.
