UNH Junior Board Partners with We Did It

Wednesday, July 24, 2013

The Junior Board is already looking forward to the November delivery of 50+ care packages to college freshmen who came from UNH settlement houses. The committee has already had its first meeting on Monday, June 10 at The Actors Fund offices, and will have an upcoming meeting on July 25th at Viacom.

We Did It, a new crowd-funding platform, has agreed to work with the Junior Board on this initiative, free of cost. This exciting partnership will allow Junior Board members to share information about donating with their social networks and will raise the profile of the initiative with corporate partners.

Co-chairs  Dylan Armajani and Rebecca Sauer have really been bringing the Care Package Program to another level this year.  In order to sign-up more college-bound young people across the UNH network and gather material to use in a soon to be produced promotional video, the Care Package Committee launched the UNH College Video Contest.  The Contest received many wonderful submissions, all of which were vying for the grand prize of a 16 GB iPad mini!

Moving forward, those who submitted videos will be added to the care package program list and their creative and informative submissions will be used to help fundraise and item-raise for this year’s care packages.

Last year’s care packages included items such as UNH-branded playing cards, water bottles, USB drives, earphones, snacks, and more.  The committee will be finalizing their goals for this year’s campaign and they will be item/fundraising in the summer, followed by a packing party on November 7th, 2013. Save the Date and email juniorboard@unhny.org for more information.

The Board Development Committee has been busy finalizing the updated structure and expectations for Junior Board membership. This includes various levels of UNH Junior Board involvement, from being a “JB Friend”, a “JB Committee Member”, or a “Full JB Member”.

Special thanks to Joanna Crispe, Board Development Co-Chair, for attending the UNH Board of Directors meeting on June 4th to report out about the latest activities of the Junior Board. College Care Packages are on Their Way

Tuesday, December 04, 2012
The UNH Junior Board just sent off 50 care packages to college freshmen who had been assisted by UNH member college access programs. Recipients, including the winners of this year’s Viacom Scholarship, from 8 different member agencies were sent support and encouragement with these packages as they study hard at Binghamton University, Stony Brook University, Cornell University, and University of Wisconsin- Madison, just to name a few. Thanks to donors, including UNH Board President Lew Kramer, Ernst & Young, New York University, Promo Direct, and The US Playing Card Company, the care packages were filled with items like water bottles, pens, gym bags, playing cards, and sewing kits –great for students away from home for the first time.

Junior Board Care Package Program

Tuesday, September 18, 2012

The Junior Board, a group of young professionals dedicated to the UNH mission, has been active in the college access scene by leading college and career panels at several UNH agencies since the beginning of this year. Now they are taking their involvement to the next level. We are excited to introduce the Junior Board Care Package Program, a way for the Junior Board to offer a source of support and encouragement for students who have participated in their College Access/Prep programs as they enter their first year of college. Announcing the Junior Board's College Care Package Project and Committee

Friday, July 20, 2012

The Junior Board’s College Care Package Project is well underway!  UNH and Junior Board Co-Leaders would like to thank Joanna CrispeJulia Miller, Joi Rae, Crystal Reece, Jason Wong, Clare Premo, Jae Yi, and Matthew Phifer of Henry Street Settlement for volunteering to be a part of the Care Package Committee and putting forth a mighty effort in helping make this project a reality.  By staying in contact with students who have previously been a part of college access programs housed at our various agencies, The UNH Junior Board hopes to act as a continuing support system for these students and help them maintain a positive attitude as they tackle the college transition.

Want to get involved?

UNH would greatly appreciate the donation of new items that can be included in the care packages.  Given that we want to keep the packages as uniform as possible, we hope to get at least 25 – preferably 50 – of each item.  Anything that can be utilized by a first year college student is welcomed, and items can include school supplies, snacks, electronics, and hygiene/health products.  If you have any contact with companies that can provide such items, please contact us here.

We are also currently looking for volunteers who would be interested in being a part of our Care Package Packing Party this fall.  This event will provide the perfect opportunity to hang out with other volunteers, make new connections, learn about the Junior Board, and of course improve everyone’s wrapping and packaging skills!  Sign up for the Packing Party here.

Junior Board Career Panel, March 2011

Thursday, March 03, 2011

UNH's Junior Board took part in a career panel for young people at UNH Member Henry Street Settlement (HSS) on March 2nd. UNH Board member Nelson Hioe expressed the purpose of the panel best when he said, "Life is a lot harder when you walk alone."

The goal was to connect young people enrolled in HSS programs with successful young adults who might be able to offer advice or constructive assistance along their paths to adulthood. "College is your silver bullet," Ramik Williams told the group as he shared his own experience of being the first person from his family to graduate from college.
